Pine Valley

Client Brief

The owners envisioned more than a residence — they sought a true estate. A private world designed for generational living, complete comfort, and lasting permanence.

This was never about spectacle. Their goal was to live fully and authentically, creating a home that reflected who they are and how they gather. From the beginning, the property was conceived as a legacy to be passed down through children and grandchildren — a place of memory, tradition, and continuity.

Key priorities included:

  • Resort-style living with complete privacy and security

  • Accommodations for complex family dynamics and long-term guests

  • Grand-scale entertaining spaces, including a formal dining room with a dedicated children’s area and bar

  • A concealed scullery to support catering and large gatherings

  • Guest suites, in-law accommodations, and flexible multigenerational layouts

  • Seamless indoor-outdoor living through porches, terraces, and expansive openings to views

  • Elevators and gracious stairways for comfortable multi-level access

  • An enduring architectural language — timeless, sophisticated, and unapologetically personal

Site Challenges:

  • Topography: The site featured a steep hillside rising to a flat plateau. While our design philosophy typically discourages crest siting, the sweeping views — valley vistas in front and a golf course beyond — made the hilltop location essential.

  • Access: A direct driveway would have been excessively steep and lacked experiential interest, requiring a more intentional approach sequence.

  • Scale: The estate needed to feel expansive enough for large gatherings while remaining comfortable and intimate for everyday life.

  • Restrictions :Golf course view regulations and natural beauty protections limited placement and massing, demanding a careful balance between presence and restraint.

Design Response

A winding driveway was introduced to extend the approach, soften the grade, and create a layered arrival experience. The ascent unfolds deliberately, revealing the estate in stages and culminating in a formal stair entry inspired by European precedents.

The owners arrive separately, passing guest parking and entering discreetly through the garage into a private mudroom sequence that connects directly to the gym, home theater, and elevator — ensuring privacy without sacrificing convenience.

The estate is organized across three distinct levels, each thoughtfully programmed to support family life, guests, and entertaining.

Architectural Character

Low-maintenance masonry forms the backbone of the design, softened with refined wood accents. The result is a European-inspired aesthetic that feels timeless, grounded, and quietly confident.

Spatial Programming

Main Floor: Grand great room, light-filled kitchen, scullery, formal dining room overlooking the forest, office, and long-term guest suite

Second Floor: Primary suite with private porch overlooking the pool and golf course; four oversized children’s suites; a playroom visually connected to the great room and outdoors

Lower / Arrival Level: Gymnasium, theater, garage entry, mudroom, and vertical circulation via elevator and stair

Outdoor Integration
Expansive porches, generous sliding doors, and transitional terraces blur the boundary between inside and out, allowing the landscape to become an active participant in daily life.

Design Principles in Action

  • What the eye sees, the heart feels: Hilltop siting, layered arrival, and views composed as emotional moments

  • Sanctuary and stage: A home that is playful yet permanent, understated yet grand

  • Shifting scale: Intimate spaces such as the scullery and guest suites balance expansive rooms and porches

  • Identity revealed: Old-world refinement paired with modern livability reflects the family’s timeless sensibility

  • Light and shadow: Tall windows, a double-height great room, and covered transitions create constantly evolving light

  • Material permanence: Masonry paired with crafted wood details provides warmth, texture, and longevity

  • Variety of spaces: Lofty gathering rooms balanced with cozy retreats

  • Historical resonance: European stair sequences and detailing anchor the home in tradition

  • Playfulness: Unexpected transitions, dramatic vistas, and gathering moments invite joy

  • The human touch: Heirloom-quality craftsmanship ensures the estate feels personal, alive, and enduring

Outcome

The completed design delivers a self-contained resort estate that seamlessly blends permanence with playfulness. It supports privacy, hospitality, and multigenerational living while honoring the site’s topography and preserving its natural beauty.
